SHI to sponsor spring lecture series on art practices

Sealaska Heritage Institute (SHI) will sponsor a spring lecture series featuring notable Northwest Coast artists on art practices and career insights.

In the series, Professional Northwest Coast Art Practices, guest speakers will talk about why they chose the career pathway of a Northwest Coast artist and the steps they’ve taken to become professional artists.

Speakers will talk about their motivations, inspirations and goals as well as their educational and professional experiences, support systems they count on and planning tools they’ve used on their artist journeys.

Lectures are scheduled from 10:15-11:15 am in Shuká Hít within the Walter Soboleff Building, 105 Heritage Way, in Juneau, with the exception of Bremner’s talk, which will be virtual only. All lectures will be livestreamed and posted on SHI’s YouTube channel.

Sealaska Heritage Institute is a tribal organization founded in 1980 to perpetuate and enhance Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian cultures of Southeast Alaska. Its goal is to promote cultural diversity and cross-cultural understanding through public services and events. SHI also conducts scientific and public policy research that promotes Alaska Native arts, cultures, history and education statewide. The institute is governed by a Board of Trustees and guided by a Council of Traditional Scholars, a Native Artist Committee and a Southeast Regional Language Committee.
