SHI to sponsor 2024 fall lecture series

Free events to explore diverse cultural, scientific and historical topics

Sealaska Heritage Institute (SHI) will sponsor a free fall lecture series featuring 14 talks on diverse topics, ranging from metagenomic analysis and Indigenous knowledge and art to the history of glacial movements in Southeast Alaska.

The lectures will be held at SHI’s Walter Soboleff Building in Juneau and live streamed on the institute’s YouTube channel at noon Alaska time. Recordings of the talks will be saved to the institute’s channel immediately following each event.

The lecture series schedule is as follows:

  • Aug. 22: Metagenomic Analysis of Animals, Plants and Their Environments by Alida de Flamingh

  • Sept. 12: Indigenous Knowledge by Jeffrey Brooks
  • Sept. 17: Eagle’s Journey with Raven by Preston Singletary
  • Sept. 19: Tsimshian Art by David A. Boxley
  • Sept. 25: The Meaning of Haida Title by Terri-Lynn Williams-Davidson
  • Sept. 26: Haida Art by Robert Davidson
  • Sept. 30: Unlocking the Potential of Generative AI by Auryan Ratliff
  • Oct. 2: Some Un-Answered Arctic Questions by Bill Fitzhugh
  • Oct. 8: Waking Up from the Last Ice Age by Jason Briner
  • Oct. 24: Feeling the Histories of Lhq’a:lets by Dylan Robinson
  • Nov. 7: Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA) by Emil Notti and Willie Hensley

Sealaska Heritage Institute is a private nonprofit founded in 1980 to perpetuate and enhance Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian cultures of Southeast Alaska. Its goal is to promote cultural diversity and cross-cultural understanding through public services and events. SHI also conducts scientific and public policy research that promotes Alaska Native arts, cultures, history and education statewide. The institute is governed by a Board of Trustees and guided by a Council of Traditional Scholars, a Native Artist Committee and a Southeast Regional Language Committee.
