Beginning Copper Tinaa Jewelry

The class will learn the basics of metal working along with the cultural history of the Tinaa. Each student will complete at least one Tinaa by end of the course. Copper sheets and tools provided by SHI.

About the Instructor
Donald Gregory is Tlingit from Angoon, Alaska. He is Raven of the Deisheetaan clan. His crest is the Raven/Beaver, and he comes from the Deishu Hít (End of the Trail House). His Tlingit name, Héendeí, translates as “In the water” and was given to him by Deisheetaan Elder Héendeí David Smith of Angoon. Héendeí was first inspired by the art world as a child, and thus began a lifelong passion for art. His tutors and mentors include Amos Wallace, Ray Peck, Michael “Mick” Beasley, Richard “Rick” Beasley, Ed Kunz, Walter Bennett, and Barry Smith; all well-known Tlingit artists from Southeast Alaska. He also studied formline and silver engraving under Steve Brown from Washington state and mask carving with Ray Watkins. His media include wood, ivory, gold, silver, copper and fossil teeth. Donald has 10 years of experience teaching formline design and NWC-style wood carving. He has worked at Sealaska Heritage Institute for over 15 years.
